Ptarmigan Summer Picnic

Fifty-eight Ptarmigans and their friends braved the heat and humidity to
attend the annual summer picnic.  The picnic was once again held at Borough
Line Park in Emmaus.  There was volleyball, tennis, bocce ball and a host
of other activities along with good food, drink and Ptarmigan fellowship.
Our president was unable to attend the picnic (he was in Bangkok) but we
still enjoyed his melons.  Thanks to Barb Stephens, Connie Hickernell and
Linny Esterly for another job well done.

A pair of ladies sun glasses were left at the picnic.  They can be claimed
by calling Linny Esterly
at 610-395-1574.

 Sep 29 Meeting

Representatives from Blue Mountain, Jack Frost, Big Boulder, Shawnee, Camelback, and Sunday River, Me spoke about new developments and activities at their ski areas. Lots of free prizes were given out.  Trip sign-ups began.  Don't procrastinate!  Some trips were filled and some are nearly filled already!

Sep 15 Meeting

The first meeting was great, despite a mix-up that put us in the smaller meeting room.  Fullerton Fire Co. made up for the mistake with a great food layout and helpful hosts.  Mike Slifka and Joe Beaver from Jack Frost/Big Boulder put on a great show, talking about summer and non-ski activities at The Big Two.

October Meeting Recap

Our own Jim Policelli gave a great talk on ski safety, encouraging everyone to think about wearing helmets on the slopes. While helmets do not ensure injury-free skiing, they help prevent many of the more serious consequences, Jim reports from his experience on the National Ski Patrol.

Frank Lupo of Coordinated Health Systems, Bethlehem, also did a great show on pre-season fitness and the importance of stretching before hitting the slopes. If you missed Frank's presentation, ask someone who attended the meeting for a copy of Frank's basic stretching information.

Jim Thorpe Bike Ride

Announced at the Oct meeting, this brainchild of Linny Esterly (with promotional assistance from Ray Cope) saw 26 Ptarmigans biking from Whitehaven to Jim Thorpe. The group enjoyed good weather and camaraderie and was well attended considering that only meeting attendees found out about it. Shows the spirit of spontaneity that some members still have!

Skating Party a Success

Led by Phil Klopp, 30 Ptarmigans traded skis for skates and strutted their stuff at Skateaway on 19 Oct. A good time was had by all.

Halloween Party

A great party!  Devilish, goulish, grotesque, laughable, huggable, disgustable, flushable, hand-dipped smokable (non-inhaling of course),......the list goes on.  Great bunch of costumes!  You had to be there!  Check out the photos!

Hikes

Sunday Nov. 15 was the last planned hike at Blue Mountain.  About 10+/- Ptarmigans and a couple K-9's once again proved to themselves that it sure is alot easier to get down & up the mountain with lifts running, snow, and "boards" on your feet!  Another great Fall day outdoors.  It was in the upper 50's, windy, and sunny.

December Meeting Recap

From all reports, the White Elephant Gift Exchange was quite a hit. Participants had a great time strategizing and swapping (gifts, that is) to wind up with that perfect (or not-so-perfect) prize. A singing, stuffed frog made the rounds many times before going home with that lucky someone. Hey, that sounds like some of the members at a club party.  Our energetic and creative program director, Joe McDermott, said that enthusiasm ran high enough at the exchange to consider bringing it back next year. So, start saving that special gift now.

Christmas Party another Roaring Success

Ninety-seven Ptarmigans sipped, supped, and swung the night away at the Barnhouse Village restaurant on 18 Dec 98. The DJ, Gary Sobolow, got everyone up early to kick off the dancing and played lots of requests. The dance contest revealed that some of our members have many talents in the "lap dancing" category of ballroom competition. And the contest proved once again that Ptarmigan women are far sexier and more imaginative than the men. Thanks go out to Bill Ortner, Linny Esterly and Barb Stephens for putting together this fun event. Check out the photos!

January Meeting Recap

January's meeting featured an interesting talk by Marc Lombardi, former board of directors member for the Amateur Ski Instructors Association, who explained how Ptarmigan members can become certified instructors, ski clinics offered by ASIA, and the benefits of club participation in ASIA.
Some of you might remember the organization as QUASI -- Qualified Amateur Instructors Association. We already have at least three members interested in certification. If you want more information, check out ASIA on the web at www.asiaski.com. (Joe McDermott)

February Meeting Recap

Thanks to Jim Landis for the loan of the large-screen projector and sound system for our Warren Miller videos at the February meeting. To those with sharp eyes, I mistakenly credited Jim Masters for the equipment last month. Mea culpa.
I also want to thank everyone who helped me with programs this year, particularly our fearless leader, Bob Campbell, who has been invaluable in arranging for everything from our Halloween party DJ to popcorn for last month's Video Night.
And please don't forget to show your gratitude for Clarence the bar-tender who has been great during our first year at Fullerton Fire Co.''

Last Meeting Recap

The March meeting went well; we had about a half-dozen other clubs in to tell us about warm-weather activities to keep us going over the summer.
Congratulations and well wishes to the new officers and board members.      Joe McDermott

Climbed the Walls

On Sunday April 18 a combined Ptarmigan/Mack ski club event, "climb the
walls" was enjoyed by 13+ members at the North Summit Climbing Gym in
Windgap. Everyone had a great time and are already to book next year's
trip. Thanks to those who helped belay and good luck to those who learned.
FYI-Northampton Community College is sponsoring an 8 week beginner climbing
course on thursday nights in June/July.   .....  Check out the photos!
