Park City Re-cap

by Brian Nuss

On February 25th, roughly 50 Ptarmigans and friends departed for Park City, UT in a quest for the “Best Powder in the World” and more skiing memories to add to the archives.  I know I can successfully say I’ve added a few memories to the vault (hey Joel, thanks for posting the video clip!)

As far as the weather goes, the week started off great.  We enjoyed beautiful blue skies and little cloud cover Saturday thru Monday; the temperatures were pleasantly in the low 40’s, and the words “spring skiing” became a common theme of conversation.  We had flurries and a dusting of the fresh stuff Monday night into mid-morning Tuesday; the afternoon cleared off, the sun came out, and the blue skies returned as the sun warmed the hills and the town.  The remainder of the week was more overcast, but still enjoyable.

I had the opportunity to ski with many different people of all different abilities during the week.  I love skiing the cruisers with my parents (which we did on Saturday at Park City), but quickly upgraded to the steeps, deeps and bumps with members of “The A Team.”  Thanks to these fine folks, I had the opportunity to ski some of the most challenging terrain I’ve ever seen… let alone put my skis on.  The highlights include Daly Bowl at Deer Valley, and 94 Turns & Fright Gully at the Canyons.

And, of course, there was my Big Adventure.  Let me tell ya, if anyone ever says “Just follow Jeanne Weiser,” think about it really good before you do!  Daly Bowl with the A Team will forever be burned into my memory!  Al, Joel, Mark and I went back on Friday and skied it again.  They wanted a challenging run to end the week on, and I wanted to see what it looked like with my eyes open and standing up.  Oh, and Jeanne, thanks; I’d follow you anywhere (and hope to next year!)

There were some negatives: we had some lost bags (one on the way out, and 20 on the way home), one lucky couple had to be rescued from a broken lift, and our condos were at the top of a hill (which made for a tiring end of the day).  There was a sickness that seemed to make its way around the group, and caused some folks to miss days on the snow.  Thankfully though, I think everyone made it home in one piece.  And, hopefully, everyone can say they enjoyed themselves.

Some of my highlights for the week:
* Jane & Bush in the Bar Saturday night,
* Daly Bowl’s slide for life,
* Skiing with the A Team (Jeanne & Tom, Scott, Mark, Al, Joel, Denny, Rich, and the others),
* 94 Turns and Fright Gully with Brian Ziegler,
* Al’s guided Real Estate Tour and Joel pulling an “Ed Singer” to get it on film,
* Jane and the chairlift,
* Meeting Bush – I’ll never be the same…
* And Jane, finally, getting in my pants.  Jane… you’re hot, soooo hot!

Good show, Curt.  Thanks for running the trip, taking the heat, and looking forward to next year.  I know I am!
